HOW YOU WILL BENEFIT FROM KNOWING CAMERA REPAIR
As a photographer you will be able to check out a camera ...so you will own the best cameras always working - at low cost. Often you will be able to spot trouble before your camera breaks down. It now becomes practical to buy and use second hand cameras. As a dealer or collector you will be able to buy non working used cameras at low cost and fix them up to sell. Many fine professional and classic cameras are very cheap if not working. Recently I bought a jammed Leica in near mint condition for $100 and fixed it in less than an hour. A customer of ours bought a Hasselblad in a yard sale for $5. I bought an original 1888 Kodak for $50 and sold it for $2000 a few years ago. Some classic cameras are worth as much as $80,000. Camera repair is a good trade too. With a shop you can bill $75 to $100/hr for repairs. As an employee you will earn $25,000/yr or more and there is NO unemployment.
Most of the camera repair people who worked on the great classic cameras, such as Zeiss, Leica, Graflex, Rollei and Nikon are now extremely old. Many have already died off, and the trade is in danger of becomming a "lost art." Here is a good opportunity for younger people to take over. Only in my books are the real trade secrets of camera repair revealed.
A word to the wise: Camera repair is not affected by wars or economic recessions as other businesses are. When times are bad, people are more apt to fix up their old cameras...instead of trading them in for new ones, you see... And when they travel less, pictures become more important to them. How well should a good camera perform? Which are the best cameras? (Click here for a repairman's confidential opinion.)
