November, 2000

Director: Dave Jacobi

November is upon us and it is time to cast your vote for the candidate of your choice for next year's officers. Let's try for a record turn out for the election meeting on November 2. As I said last month, your vote is important.

If you missed the Upstate Challenge, you missed a great time. The new games produced much laughter. The challenge was won by Spartanburg… "Go Team". A special thank you to Roger and his volunteers for a great job,

November 5th , is Whitten Center Christmas Run. Please bring unwrapped gifts such as sweat shirts and pants, socks, knit caps, portable radios, and other personal items. Chestnuts Roasting by the Open Fire . . .

OK, so we're not roasting chestnuts, however, we are roasting Weenies and Smores, Saturday, November 25, 2000; 7:00pm - 10:00pm at Roger & Gina Gossenreiter's farm in Tryon, NC. The Chapter will provide weenies, buns, condiments and smore fixings. We are also providing music by "State of Mind" (you may have heard them at Side Street Pizza in Tryon.) Acoustic guitars and Djembe drums, just the type of music you would want to hear around a bonfire . . . old rock, blues and all the favorites. This is a BYOD&C&CP . . . Bring Your Own Drinks, Chairs & Cuddle Partner, these will not be provided by the Chapter! If your Cuddle Partner is not a Chapter Member, a small donation of $5 is very much appreciated. So. Pull out the mittens, earmuffs and blankets . . . this is going to be a blast!

E-mail the Webmaster for Directions to the Gossenreiter farm.

CHRISTMAS DONATION IDEAS

It has been suggested that we do something for those less fortunate this Christmas. We would like your input on this. Do you wish to sponsor a family for Christmas through one of the churches, make cookies, supply small personal items, etc. for those in nursing homes, donate items to the Rape Crisis Center? Give us your ideas and see if we can make something good happen, remember Christmas is for giving.

Safety

Well there I was riding along the other day, all of a sudden my bike started breaking down, backfiring and died as I pulled into the gas station. I needed gas so I topped it off and turned on the ignition, it started and died. Hmmmmm, what could it be? I noticed my neutral light hadn't come on, but thought nothing of it. Then as I sat there pondering my next move, call somebody with a trailer to come and get me or what, it hit me. BOINK!!!!! I thought the battery is strong, as it would keep turning it over and starting, but the bike would not keep running so I could get down the road. It was starting to get real cold, and I had another ninety miles to the house. So I took the seat off and pulled the caps off the battery and it was low on water. I topped it off and the bike started again, rode around the lot and said OK here I go!!!!! Wrong, NOT!!!!!????? Here 's what was happening. The charging system isn't strong enough to charge the battery and keep the bike running with the lights on, when the battery is dead. I carry a small set of jumper cables and asked a biker looking character if I could charge my battery off of his car. (He was a biker in a cage going to Biketoberfest, no scoot and between rides). It worked we chatted and went on our way. These compact set of cables have come in handy before, I suggest carrying a set!!!!
Keep your face in the wind and the sun on your back.
