PRINTING TERMS GLOSSARY
A
- bad break
- A line break that is visually jarring, such as a page that begins with the suffix "ing" or a column that contains a single word.
- bad color
- A printed sheet with too much, too little, or uneven ink.
- bad copy
- Badly written manuscript or copy that is difficult to set.
- bad lay
- A sheet poorly centered during printing.
- baseline
- An imaginary horizontal line on which type characters rest and below which type descenders descend.
- baseline shift
- A character attribute command in certain page layout programs that enables selected text to be raised or lowered relative to the normal baseline position.
- benday
- Method of laying a screen on artwork or plates to obtain various tones and shadings.
- bindery
- A book-binding establishment or the section in a printing concern where finishing work such as folding, collating, drilling, padding etc. is done..
- bindery marks
- Marks that appear on a press sheet to indicate how the sheet should be cropped, folded, or bound.
- binding
- The process of fastening printed pages into a book. Usually includes collating, scoring, folding, stitching or gluing, and trimming.
- black generation
- The amount of black generated on the black plate of a color separation.
- blanket
- In offset lithography, the rubber-surfaced roller which transfers the image from plate to paper.
- bleed
- Any part of the printed image that extends to the trim edge of the page or across the gutter.
- blueline (or blueprint)
- In offset lithography, a photo-print made from the negatives that will be used to make the printing plate. It serves as a final proof, folded and assembled to show how the final job will print.
- blurb
- Text that summarizes an article, usually set smaller that the headline and larger than the running text. Also called a breakout or pull quote.
- bond paper
- Strong, durable paper used for letterheads, laser printing, and other business purposes. May be made from cotton fiber, wood pulp, or a combination. May be watermarked.
- book
- A number of sheets brought together, folded, and stitched.
- border
- Printed line or design around artwork, text, etc.
- breakout
- A sentence excerpted from the body copy and set in large type, used to break up running text and draw the reader's attention to the page. Also called a blurb or pull quote.
- brightness
- The variation of a color from dark to light resulting from an increase or decrease in illumination.
- Bristol (board)
- Stiff, heavyweight paper suitable for covers, menus, cards, etc.
- bullet
- Typographic dot or other pointer used to set off items in lists.
- buffer
- A temporary holding area in memory or on a hard disk where information can be stored by one program or device and then read by another.
- byline
- The name of the author of an article.
