- electronic printing
- Any technology that reproduces pages without the use of traditional ink, water, or chemistry. Usually electrostatic or electrophotographic.
- electrostatic printing or copying
- Printing process which works by creating an image with an electrostatic charge on a polished plate, attracting magnetic ink (toner) to the plat, and transferring it to paper with heat and pressure.
- em
- Unit of space (width) equal to the point size of the type.
- emboss
- To stamp a raised or depressed area or image into paper with metal dies after printing.
- em dash
- A punctuation mark generally used to signify a change or interruption in the train of thought expressed in a sentence or to set off an explanatory comment.
- emulsion
- The photosensitive layer on a piece of film or paper.
- en
- Half an em.
- encapsulated PostScript (EPS)
- A file format that stores PostScript information in an image file so that it may be transferred as a unit to a suitable page layout or drawing program or used for preparing images for later typesetting. An encapsulated PostScript file has two parts: a low resolution (72 dpi) bitmap picture of the screen and a full resolution-independent PostScript description to pass on to a suitable printer.
- en dash
- A punctuation mark used to indicate a range of dates or numbers or to separate the elements of a compound adjective, one part of which is hyphenated or consists of two words.
- engrave
- To produce a raised printed surface by printing with a cut-away plate.
- EPS
- See encapsulated PostScript.
- errata
- A list of errors in a book which are of sufficient importance to be called to the attention of the reader.
- etchant
- A substance, like an acid, used in etching or in fountain solution.
- Euclidean dot shapes
- Round, elliptical, square, or linear halftone dots that invert with their cell after 50% intensity. This strategy helps reduce dot gain problems sometimes experienced with elliptical, square, and linear dots.
