hairline rule
A very thin typographic rule.
halftone
The representation of a continuous-tone image as a series of dots that look like gray tones when printed. Also called a screened halftone because traditionally the original image is photographed through a finely ruled screen, the density of which varies depending on the printer's capabilities. See also AM screening, FM screening, and screening.
halftone resolution
The spacing of the dot matrix in a haltone image, usually measured in lines per inch (lpi). Also called the frequency or halftone frequency.
hang
To place characters outside the left margin.
hanging indent
A paragraph style in which the left margin of the first line extends beyond the left margin of subsequent lines.
hard copy
Printed images or information. See also soft copy.
headline
The title of an article or story.
highlight
The lightest part of an image; that is, the part with the greatest value.
holdout
The ability of a paper to hold ink on the surface instead of absorbing it. Papers with good holdout produce sharper printed images.
hue
Color name (red, yellow, blue, etc.).
